Regada Water Festival
Regada water festival's name came from the spanish word "Regar" which meant to pour. The people in cavite use Chavacano which is a "Tagalized-Spanish". To which the meaning of what the Regada water festival celebrates is the fiesta of St. John, as according to the new testament, was the one to baptize Jesus in the river of Jordan. Where water is a constant feature that was also the main feature in the festival. It is the symbol of baptism. The very first celebration of this festival was in 1996, Cavite City. Through this festivals the participants undergo the tradition of getting drenched in water as part of the celebration.
Basayaw Sa Kalye
During this week long celebration, on the last day of the event, there is a portion called the "basayaw sa kalye" which literally translates to "wet dancing in the streets" or "wet street dancing". This is one of the highlights of the celebration. But before the performance starts, the image of St. John is paraded until noon, where then the participants start the festivities. The participants are students that represent their respective schools. They perform street dancing where they wear colorful clothings and perform dances for the visitors.
Paulan Sa Kalye
In this event the festival goers believe that being drenched in the event can invite or bring about blessings. This practice is called the "Paulan sa Kalye" which translates to "to be rained on in the street". In this part of the celebrations people bring their own water guns and sometimes the fire department join in on the fun and produce water jets.
Regada water festival has tons of other activities through out it's long duration. They hold concerts, cultural or variety shows, exhibits and most importantly they uphold their beliefs as it goes. This event also helps in environmetal awareness. Regada Water festival contains loads of fun activities while also maintaining the religious background that the festival holds.
